Ukranian Village

Send to a friend

…ultra-cozy, around the corner from ultra-chic

While some of the near northwest side can be a bit overwhelmingly hip, Ukranian Village has remained, for the most part, cool, eclectic and on the chill side. Translation? It’s still affordable, offering three-flats, refurbished apartments and condos on tree-lined streets, and a few nearby landmarks like Ss. Volodymyr and Olga Ukranian Catholic Church.

A mini tour of the ‘hood: Damen Avenue has a ton of new, locally owned businesses, Western Avenue is a main thoroughfare and Division Street—well, Division Street is something else completely. Compare the stretch between Damen and Western of today with what it looked like ten years ago, and it’s shockingly different. A walk that used to make you check over your shoulder a few times is now one of the busiest strips in the area, with news-worthy restaurants, bars, cafés, salons, baby stores, you name it.

Favorite hangouts include Alliance Bakery (free wi-fi!) and Letizia’s Natural Bakery, feeding hungry residents since 1998 and the adjacent wine bar (owned by the same folks), Enoteca Roma.
