…the heart of the City That Works

“Does this train go to the Loop?”

“No, it goes ‘beep, beep.’”

It’s one of the corniest jokes around, but if you’re a Chicagoan, you know it. And the real answer? Yes, all el trains go to the Loop, encircling Chicago’s main financial district in less than two square miles. All Metra trains, all highways, all things Chicago (or most) branch out from this area.

Other than being the main business hub, where the Chicago Board of Trade is located, this is also a major tourist magnet. Major icons like the Sears Tower, Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute and the Harold Washington Library are located here—and among it, some of the most compelling North American urban architecture.

You might imagine that shopping opportunities abound, and you’d be right. Nightlife is limited to well-known restaurants and since July 2000, with the “Broadway in Chicago” initiative, lots of theater. A few blocks’ walk will take you past venues such as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts-Oriental Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, the Storefront Theater and the landmark Auditorium Theater.

If you’re looking to live in the area, you’ll be able to find apartments and condos in new and vintage buildings. And don’t worry, not everyone in the Loop tells corny jokes.
