…Mexican community and artists’ mecca

Pilsen has always been the heart of Chicago’s Mexican immigrant community, as evidenced nearly everywhere you turn—in murals on the sides of buildings, in restaurants, in the faces of families walking down the street together, in music that beats from inside three-flats and storefronts. It’s incredibly vibrant, totally compelling—which is probably why so many visual artists have moved into the neighborhood.

Some of the most affordable housing and a close proximity to UIC have started a shift in the area population from Mexican and Hispanic to younger and whiter, and many longtime residents are clamoring to maintain Pilsen’s immigrant identity.

Fortunately, the Mexican-American Fine Arts Museum stands at the heart of Pilsen, offering a literal foundation for the community. People of all shapes and sizes visit the museum, strolling the area afterwards for art galleries and the best tacos this side of the border.

If it’s tough to leave, you’ll easily be able to find an affordable apartment or condo, usually located in multi-unit, loft-style buildings as opposed to single-family homes.
