…a touch of history, driving its way back into the mainstream

In the first quarter of the 19th century, cars were just beginning to mandate themselves into the lives of the middle class and, as a result, areas like Motor Row were developed. Here, Ford, Cadillac, Pierce Arrow, Hudson and others built elaborate showrooms within a few blocks of each other, making the act of purchasing a car an event that was as convenient as it was swanky.

These days, the area is a shadow of the much-visited destination from 100 years ago, but with the recent and ongoing construction of reasonably priced, souped-up condos, it won’t be long before residents and business owners build it up into a bustling extension of downtown.

Warehouses, multi-story and simple two-floor buildings—some of which were built in the early 20th century by notable architects—are also being converted into living spaces.

Yet despite the hotbed of activity located nearby at McCormick Place, (the city’s largest convention center, attracting nearly 3 million visitors a year), Motor Row remains a bit sparse, with the majority of amenities and activities lying uptown—about 5 to 10 minutes in your car.
