…where bohemians inhabit mansions

If there was such a thing as an affordable, Midwestern Beverly Hills, Logan Square might be it.

It’s not a wealthy area—in fact, it’s inhabited mostly by middle-class families, recent grads and artists. But imagine lush, tree-canopied streets, 28 miles of surrounding parks and historic, pre-WWI mansions, many of which are available for viewings via the annual House & Garden Walk.

Beyond the Boulevards, the other side of Logan Square includes a handful of run-down streets that mingle with strips of well-visited nightlife. In general, the area has been on an upswing for years. Although it’s the perfect candidate for severe gentrification, this ’hood has remained a diverse, vibrant community, easily accessible via local thoroughfares, buses, the Blue Line el and the Kennedy Expressway.

One of the signature sights in Logan Square is the Illinois Centennial Memorial Column, built in 1918 to commemorate the state’s 100th anniversary. At the intersection of Logan, Kedzie and Milwaukee, it stands as a proud, 70-foot tall signifier of the great changes experienced during the state’s first century.
