…get schooled in Chicago’s most gentrified ’hood

Home to DePaul University, Chicago’s largest private education institution and the largest Catholic university in the country, Lincoln Park is a desirable area for young professionals and families.

This ’hood hops from daycare to nightlife, as businesses cater to groups of frugal, low-income students (find them eating the one-egg platter at Clarke’s and sifting through the sale racks on Armitage) to young professionals and families enjoying the first taste of a six-figure salary.

As often happens when you plop down a university with 23,000+ students in the middle of one of the busiest neighborhoods in the city, sidewalks end up as crowded as the parking-challenged streets. But don’t worry—with practice, you too can learn how to masterfully stroller-dodge, order a sandwich at Potbelly’s and parallel park.

Once you do, Lincoln Park will open up to you like a textbook the night before a final, with amenities like the country’s only free zoo, tons of green space and oodles of retail.

In its current tranquil state, little attention is paid to the history of Lincoln Park. Back in the 1960s, as Puerto Rican immigrants rallied for human rights—sometimes violently—the Young Lords gang ruled the streets. Then, in the 70s and 80s, as DePaul’s reputation grew, the area began to change and most immigrants were priced out.

These days, area brownstones, four-plus construction and new condos are some of Chicago’s most expensive real estate.
