...lake views along the Red Line

In the late 1800s, Edgewater was a suburb known as the “celery-growing capital of the Midwest.” Really.

More than 100 years later, residents pay little attention to their apiaceous “roots,” but they have maintained the peaceful vibe of a former suburb. Even though this is one of Chicago’s most densely populated areas, the old oaks and maples, vintage architecture and close proximity to Lake Michigan seem to slow down the city pace.

Because rents are moderate, you’ll find all types of people from all over the globe here, from Native Americans to Yugoslavians to Africans, students from Loyola and beyond, first-time homeowners, parents and a high concentration of gay and lesbian couples.

And happily, numerous high-rise buildings make lake views as plentiful as the cute, independent businesses that line Sheridan Road and Broadway.

Affordability, accessibility and a bit of ethnicity...it’s a recipe for good living.
