…authentic Chicago in the midst of transition

Cragin is a mostly residential, quiet corner of northwest Chicago, boasting tons of lush space inside Cragin Park, Hansin Park, Riis Park and others.

Walking down the street, you’ll see evidence of the area’s original settlers in signs like D & Z (Dom Ksiazki) House of Books and Gene’s Sausage Shop & Delicatessen. And, when you walk into Staropolska’s for mushroom soup and pierogi, you’ll be treated like one of the family—not necessarily with wide smiles and open arms, but with comfort food and great care.

Recently, the area has experienced a growth in its Hispanic population, which has caused a stir for the ethnic majority in place. But with a common desire for family, safety and good education for the community’s children, the transition has been a peaceful one.

After all, there’s no better way to finish off a great Polish meal than with café con leche and flan.
