Chicago has always been known for its legendary comedy scene and wonderful performers. Second City has groomed many comedy icons such as Bill Murray, John Belushi, Mike Myers and Tina Fey just to name a few. Literally, next door to the main stage sits Donny’s Skybox. The small, 100 seat theatre showcases many “up and coming” future sketch and improvisation comics of tomorrow. Tickets are reasonably priced and the performers bring a raw, edginess that is rarely scene on television anymore. You really can’t beat the value and who knows, you may just see the next Stephen Colbert or Rachel Dratch. (Also alums)
In the mid-1990s Second City in Chicago started a training academy that set out to teach the fine art of comedic sketch comedy. Through classes at the academy, students were given a forum to hone their skills. As they went through classes learning established comedy formulas and techniques, they knew they would eventually graduate to the main stage. Long before the main stage of Second City they are given Donny’s Skybox as an open canvas for their gift.
Donny’s Skybox is tucked away on the top floor of the Piper’s Alley Complex at 1608 North Wells Street in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago. The charming, little cozy theater really makes audience members feel like they are part of the performance. Usually a scene or two ends up with performers in the crowd playing as they make use of all of the stage and its surroundings. Drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is unpretentious. Shows last about an hour and are a great place to bring a date.
After the show, there is a vast number things to in this bustling neighborhood. From a number of bars and clubs just outside to a 24 hour Starbucks on the corner, there is something for almost everyone. Not to mention, everything stays open very late and the neighborhood is safe. Parking is limited but theater goers can park across the street in a garage for about ten dollars.
Donny’s Skybox offers sketch comedy that is fun, cutting edge, sometimes bizarre and always entertaining. Fresh comedy faces cut their teeth on stage and sharpen their chops right before your eyes. The entire experience fits into almost every budget and provides tons of laughs. For a full schedule of upcoming events, click here.
