The perfect day in Avondale:
Start north on Milwaukee Avenue, stopping into one of the ubiquitous Polish grocery stores. Step up to the deli case. Order a couple of the several unpronounceable, bulging sausages staring back at you. Just do it! This is no time to be intimidated. Grab some fresh bread and a jar of serious mustard. Lug the morning’s booty back to your affordable apartment, condo or bungalow, where your modest-sized backyard allows you to have a nice, shiny Weber. Toss on the sausage and chat with your neighbors while the meat gathers neat, even, parallel grill marks (kinda looks like the Chicago street grid, don’t it?). Share your feast; there’s no way you can—or should—eat all of that.

To walk off your lunch, head over to the Home Depot to pick up supplies for your latest DIY project. Perform bicep curls with bags on the way back home. As the sun sets, head to the Abbey Pub, quite possibly the best family-owned restaurant/bar/live music venue on the north side. Order fish n’ chips and a Smithwick’s, tip Jen and Helene like there’s no tomorrow, then cross over to the venue side for some rock, blues, hip-hop or rockabilly.

Head home, close eyes, smile, sleep soundly. After all, you’re in Avondale.
