Albany Park

...a river runs through it
Just because the Chicago River meanders through here in a lazy zigzag, offering greeting card-worthy scenes, just because the streets are a little quieter, just because you’ll find canoes and small boats next to cars in the driveways, doesn’t mean that you’re in the suburbs yet. Albany Park is as Chicago as Bronzeville or Boystown—and well-kept enough to have IL governor Rod Blagojevich as one of its residents.

Once you’re on the main drags of Lawrence or Kedzie, you’ll remember that you’re in the big city. Before you hit the street, scrounge for some pocket change and duck into the local Mexican bakery, enjoy a cup of coffee at a local café or stop for some homemade hummus from the Lebanese grocery store. You’ll warm up to the community faster than you can scarf down another helping of fresh, piping-hot pita bread.

Look for affordable apartments, bungalows and cottages here. And since the area is only a few minutes from the Edens and Kennedy Expressways, it’s a quick hop to O’Hare Airport (20 minutes, depending on traffic).

Unless, of course, you prefer to meander along the river…
