…a study in diversity

You could say Clarkston is a melting pot. More than half of its residents are from outside the United States, and more than 50 countries are reflected in the high-school’s student body.

What attracts foreigners to this small DeKalb County town? For one, the vibrant Clarkston apartment rental market, in addition to condo and single-family home offerings. Plus, refugee settlement programs in the 1990s promoted this ’hood as all-accepting and great for those not from the metro Atlanta area. (In fact, Clarkston has more people of Somali ancestry—7.6 percent—than any other area in the U.S.)

Nevertheless, the city still considers itself “distinctly southern in character,” and promotes the community’s small-town charm. Clarkston boasts the first public park and playground in DeKalb (est. 1927), which these days has been modernized to include picnic pavilions, tennis courts, a softball field, a multi-use field, and, of course, new playground equipment.

There’s also a community pool, gardening project and plenty of sports programs—from Tai Chi to Ethiopian soccer. Now that’s diverse.
