…where indies and artists feel at home

Cabbagetown, once home to a tight-knit cotton mill community, is now a haven for hippies and punks, where street festivals are as common as chain retailers aren’t.

After the mill closed in 1977, Cabbagetown was nothing like the hipster ‘hood it is today. The old cotton mill was wisely converted to residential lofts in 1996, prompting gentrification and an influx of artists, musicians and young professionals.

Kudos to visionary artists like Panorama Ray, who had a photo gallery on Cabbagetown’s main drag until his death in 1997. The gallery attracted artists to the neighborhood and kept local retailers like the Cabbagetown Market alive (btw, the market, founded in 1929, carries staples, serves lunch and even offers Mexican Coca-Cola—no high fructose corn syrup!)

Whether you move to Cabbagetown for the narrow streets and quaint shotgun homes or the restaurants and independent retailers, one thing’s for sure: Your friends will want to know how your Cabbagetown got its name. Folklore differs, but as one story goes, a truck full of cabbages overturned here, filling the streets with leafy greens, and Cabbagetown was born.
