Ever since the Mall of Georgia opened in Buford, this small town has gotten a big boost.

A convenient stopping (and shopping!) point for travelers on their way from Atlanta to Lake Lanier, people may initially be drawn to the department stores and chain boutiques, but the relaxed setting often inspires people to stay a while and browse quaint, quiet Main Street, where works from the Buford Artists’ Colony can be seen in galleries and cafés.

New and older homes and Buford apartments are affordable and cute.

Originally called “the Leather City,” Buford has come a long way from its reputation as a tannery town, but at approximately 10,000 residents, it still feels like a remote escape from Atlanta’s busy center. Unless, of course, you’re in the mall parking lot.
