Bankhead

Send to a friend

…birthplace of the bounce, home to the shoulder lean

You know exactly where Bankhead is, if only because you’ve heard people like Young Dro and T.I. rap about it. You know there’s a Waffle House nearby, and that the Poole Palace Café is somewhere you’d like to visit, just for the street cred.

As a place that’s famous for giving rappers something to sing about, this neighborhood is also infamous for low incomes and high violence. Yet, dare we say it? Bankhead is being revitalized.

The Bowen Homes, a crime-ridden area in the neighborhood, is scheduled to be demolished by 2009, and projects like the English Avenue Yards are paving the way for a new kind of Bankhead, where artist housing, studio space and workshop areas for the Alliance Theater Company, Atlanta Ballet and Atlanta Opera will rule the day. And with restaurants like Bankhead Fish & Soul, crowds will keep coming back for the addictive $4 fish plate.

In the next few years, will Bankhead go the way of so many other neighborhoods that have pulled through a poverty-stricken stretch and come out on top?
