What’s In a Name?

Posted on July 30, 2008 14:55 by April Thayer - CEO

When hubbuzz.com was in its gestation period, pre-name, coming up with a name was quite a task – the difficulty of which we hadn’t expected. Apartments, neighborhoods, rent, spaces, places, digs, pad, home – these words, while all useful, are all very used. So we wound up with the concept of coining our own term, and it has served us well so far (though it’s sometimes difficult to communicate over the phone.)

Sometimes we are surprised (mostly pleasantly) at the congruity between our URL, www.hubbuzz.com, and some other sites that are out there on the World Wide Web. Here are some of our common-law friends:

www.grubhub.com – restaurants in your neighborhood that deliver
www.hubspot.com – management tool for website marketing
www.newshub.com – news aggregator, yo
u pick the sources
www.yourhub.com – neighborhood-based newspaper/website
www.coloradobizbuzz.com – rate local service providers
buzz.yahoo.com – rank stories based on you name it
www.hubinternational.com – insurance company and, yes, they have renters’ insurance
www.buzz.com – site that aggregates the hottest blogs
buzz.blogger.com – Google’s Blogger team news
www.justbuzz.com – commissionable comic artist’s site
buzzfeed.com – make stories popular and find out what’s popular with everyone else
www.buzznet.com – a site for fans of screamo emo b
ands
www.hubpages.com – online publishing on any subject from amateurs and experts
www.foodbuzz.com – food reviews and recipes from “foodies” in cities around the word

And there are, no doubt, many more.

We like our URL/name best, of course. “Hub” is a good term to use in talking about cities and neighborhoods and buzz is what’s all goin’ on…and out tagline helps clarify our mission:

Cities. Neighborhoods. Apartments. Life.

That’s hubbuzz.com right there! Start your apartment search now or find the perfect neighborhood.
